Yoshi Shimizu is a Japanese photographer whose career spans more than thirty years and over 80 countries. Half of his professional life has been dedicated to documenting humanitarian and social issues in developing regions, often in collaboration with the Red Cross and organizations such as UNESCO, WHO, UNAIDS, the Global Fund, and WWF. His photography, rooted in empathy and observation, captures both the resilience and fragility of humanity, while his fine art work explores themes of solitude, connection, and cultural identity.Originally from Japan, Yoshi moved to the United States at nineteen to study fine art photography in San Francisco. After honing his skills as a photojournalist for his university newspaper, he began his professional career in New York City in the late 1980s, assisting established photographers before launching his own practice in editorial and corporate photography. In 1995, he joined the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva, Switzerland, as Chief Photographer — a role that shaped much of his humanitarian vision and global perspective.Over the decades, Yoshi's assignments have taken him deep into the lives of people affected by conflict, disaster, and change — from child soldiers in Sierra Leone to survivors of the Indian Ocean tsunami, from indigenous tribes across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to children living on the streets of Bangladesh, Kenya, El Salvador, and Honduras. His photographs, while grounded in reality, are marked by a quiet poetry that reflects a deep respect for the human spirit.Beyond the urgency of reportage, Yoshi has developed a rich body of personal and fine art photography — portraits, street scenes, landscapes, and abstract explorations that reveal his sensitivity to light, texture, and emotion. For the first time, these more intimate works are being shared publicly.His Intangible Cultural Heritage Project, created to preserve the fragile traditions of Indonesia, Bhutan, and Bolivia, was exhibited at the United Nations European Headquarters and private galleries in Geneva between 2008 and 2011. Endorsed by UNESCO and supported by Canon Europe, the project was later featured at the Linden Museum in Stuttgart during “The World of Shadow Theatre” in 2015. That same year, his exhibition at Geneva’s Cité du Temps portrayed the transformation of young violinists as they blossomed into musicians.Yoshi's photographs have been exhibited at the United Nations in Geneva, the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Geneva, Switzerland and Melbourne, Australia. Today, he continues to explore new visual forms — from portraiture and landscape to multimedia — seeking to express the delicate balance between humanity, culture, and nature.He currently resides in Europe.
