28 March 2016:

Kiribati, an island located in the central Pacific Ocean, can be a diver's paradise. But for the locals, it's far from a paradise. In addition to many social, economical and health issues afflicting the island, it is facing serious environmental woes due to the effects of climate change. It is estimated that the island will be completely under water by 2100. When I asked the local residents “ You are lucky to live on such a beautiful island, what do you every day?” They answered “ nothing, we got no work. Men go out fishing, women just sit and watch the waves all day. We worried about our future because the island is disappearing into the water” But it seems that children are happy and worry free playing in the water every day like any other children in the world.

Hatsumode - the practice of visiting a shrine or a temple during the new year in Japan to pray for good health, peace and prosperity for the year.  Here, we visited the Ohishi shrine in Ako City, Hyogo prefecture in Japan. A total of 170,000 people visited this shrine on the 1st of January alone.

WHAT'S IN MY CAMERA BAG?

For years, the equipment I have always used for assignments work was Canon SLR and DSLR, the latest model I used was Canon 5DMKII, with several L lenses.

Carrying heavy loads of equipment for many years has become an occupational hazard of many photographers. I am no exception. Finding solutions to reduce the weight of equipment was a big challenge. While trying to replace Canon gear with much smaller and lighter cameras, it was also important to maintain image quality at professional level. A few years ago, Sony introduced NEX 7, one of the first mirror-less cameras on the market at that time.  I have tested NEX7 as a backup camera on assignments. It performed perfectly as a backup camera but not as a main. Only when Sony came out full frame A7 and A7R, I was comfortable to switch from Canon to Sony entirely.

Now this is what I bring for a typical assignment work.

I am a bag freak. I have no idea how many camera bags and backpacks I have accumulated over the years. But finally I have settled with a PacSafe anti-theft backpack that I have recently discovered (even though it's been on market for quite some time) and been using on every single assignment.

The Poorest of the poor - there are hundreds and thousands of men, women and children living and working at the Payatas, the largest garbage dumpsite in Metro Manila in the Philippines. When a convoy of trucks filled with solid wastes arrives at the site, young children fiercely compete for the spots on the trucks to scavenge "valuable" wastes.

27 July 2015:

The Engyoji temple in Japan is best know as one of the film locations for the Last Samurai. The temple offers meditation sessions to the general public. During my recent visit to the temple, I was mediating on my own by watching the people in a meditation session.  When the session is finished, the first person got on a mobile phone was the master monk himself!! After all, he is just one of us being trapped in the mundane world ….

20 July 2015:

After spending a few hours walking under the scorching heat of the sun in the beautiful town of Segovia, Spain, I took refuge in a small church off the main street to cool down.  What jumped into my sight upon entering the church was this brilliant rays of holy light pouring down to a young man contemplating in the darkness.  It was such a beautiful scene!

06 July 2015:

During an assignment in Namibia, I stayed at the lodge near the Etosha national park. I was woken up by the noise outside of my room and peeked through the window to find out a pair of giraffes were approaching toward my room. I quickly turned on a small reading lamp near the bed and quietly went outside to set up my camera on a tripod.  Since the only available light source was the reading lamp through the window and moonlight through the clouds, I was compelled to use a long shutter speed, hoping I can get the giraffes somewhere in the frame......AND they were!!!!
